Increasing Bequests to Your Organization through Effective Marketing
Your charity – provided it has been around for awhile and has a positive image – will receive a certain amount of bequest gifts without assistance, like manna from heaven. But with some thoughtful efforts to promote bequests, you can increase the number and size of these gifts. And since bequest gifts can be some of the largest (and hence, most cost effective) gifts a charity will receive, charities are well advised to promote these types of gifts to the extent they can. This article will outline some of the many ways you can do this.

Quick Tip: Bequests – What Is the Value to Your Charity?
Planned gifts come in many forms, but bequests continue to represent about 80% of the planned gifts received by charities. The most common form of a bequest is a commitment through a donor’s will. However, when a donor names a charity as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, a POD (payable on death) account, or a retirement plan, then the gift is quite similar to a bequest.
How can you calculate the present value of a future bequest or bequest-like gift? Planned Giving Manager version 6.2A has a new calculator tool that makes it easy.
-
Select Tools – Present Value of a Future Bequest on the Menu bar.
-
Choose the mortality table and interest rate you want to use in your calculation and complete the entries specific to the gift you want to value.
-
Click Calculate. The value will be displayed in the Present Value of Bequest field.
- If you wish, you can then view or print a presentation of the results
Help Clip: Numbers Diagram Now Available in Basic Gift Illustrations
Planned Giving Manager produces persuasive diagrams that address common – and some not so common – gift planning situations. The Summary of Benefits – Numbers diagram is one of the most popular of these presentations. Formerly available only in Life Income Projections (Program 3), this useful illustration is now available in Basic Gift Illustrations (Program 1), too. This addition makes it easy for you to produce in one pass all the charts, graphs, diagrams, and narratives you want for a proposal. PGM Help gives you all the details you need to make the most of the Summary of Benefits – Numbers diagram.

Updated Electronic Version of Gift Annuity Manual Just Released
We are delighted to announce that PG Calc’s stellar reference work, “Charitable Gift Annuities: The Complete Resource Manual” has been revised in a number of respects. Perhaps most notably, its many examples now feature calculations based not only on the new 2000CM mortality table published by the IRS this past spring, but also on current ACGA gift annuity rates and more recent IRS discount rates.
Even though these and other changes will be included when the print version of the manual is updated later in the year, the new electronic version is available today. It boasts a variety of ways to navigate the text and conduct quick searches. It also comes with dozens of practical prototype materials you can adapt for use in operating a gift annuity program. To learn more about the manual and how to get your own copy, go to www.pgcalc.com/education/cgamanual.htm or call 888-497-4970.

Charities Encouraged to Complete 2009 Gift Annuity Survey
The American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA) conducts a survey every five years to learn the state of charitable gift annuity programs in the United States. The 2009 survey is particularly important given the current economic climate. Charities rely on the survey results for evaluating their gift annuity programs and establishing policies.
The survey is available online at: http://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/5f4fg3ef9d
Contact Gloria Kermeen at ACGA with any questions: 317-269-6271 or acga@acga-web.org
