Planned Giving Across State Lines
If your organization has a purely local donor base, your planned giving program may not be affected by the laws of any state other than your own. But what happens when a key supporter moves to another state yet still wants to benefit the organization, whether through a charitable gift annuity or simply a bequest? Even charities that routinely work with donors throughout the country have to be mindful of all the ways legal and operational issues can have an impact on planned giving activity.

PG Calc Releases Updated Version of “Planned Giving for Canadians”
Do you work with Canadian donors? Do any of your U.S. donors own property in Canada that they are thinking of using to make a charitable gift? Does your organization have a Canadian affiliate?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should consider acquiring a copy of the electronic book “Planned Giving for Canadians.” PG Calc Senior Advisor Frank Minton has just finished revising this practical, authoritative reference for 2010. It provides not only a thorough overview of tax considerations, but also a wealth of information you will find helpful in working with both Canadian and U.S. donors.

Marketing Corner with Ann McPherson: Redefining Stewardship
Sometimes an article comes along that makes me stop and think. I read such an article recently and thought that if there was one thing a development office could do to improve its fundraising, this would be it. It’s a simple idea, but that's the beauty in it. The article is entitled "Charities Seek to Strengthen Ties to Donors Who Give Modest Sums," in the Chronicle of Philanthropy dated May 16, 2010. This article could have been titled "Redefining Stewardship."

Since the Chronicle of Philanthropy is a paid subscription we cannot provide a link, but I would highly encourage all fundraisers to get a copy of the Chronicle article and heed its advice. I should add that although this article doesn't address planned giving directly, its observations apply to planned gift fundraising just as well as they do to annual gift programs.

Here are the take-aways:

  • Prospects between high-end annual fund and major gift donors have been neglected
  • The cost of raising money from these mid-level donors is very low
  • Mid-level donors fill the gap left by the increasing difficulty in acquiring direct mail donors
  • Changing mid-level fundraising strategy can have a significant effect on a charity’s bottom line
